First Post!
AAAHH first post! I am so very excited to be able to put on paper (haha) my daily devotions and experiences with the sleepy little town of Douglas, MI and surrounding lakeshore communities. I will warn my readers however there will be A LOT of food throughout my posts. So here we go.....
This morning as all Sunday morning for the past year started out with two little eyes peeking over my bed, "Good Morning Mom" was the first thing I heard as my eyes fluttered awake. "Good Morning Will are you ready for breakfast?" With a smirk and a nod, we were out the door and on our way to fill our bellies. "Where should we go for breakfast will? The rooster place?" I say talking about one of our local breakfast eateries The Kalico Kitchen
Its a place attached to my heart as this is where my sisters and mom would spend our Sunday morning/early afternoons growing up. "No I want to go to the blue place, that Nonna and I went to" Suddenly my mind starts racing "Blue place? What is he talking about?" After a quick call to my mom I find the answer The Waypoint
After opening the door I am instantly reverted back to my own childhood. Some of my fondest memories of growing up in Douglas somehow always occurred that day to begin days Sunday. My mom, trying to create some sort of structure, would wake us up at 7 a.m sharp ( a thing most teenagers dreaded on the weekend) after wiping the sleepies out of our eyes and sitting on the heat registers for 20 or so minutes we would hear her shout out of the bathroom "Hurry up or you'll have to go to church in your pj's" Ugh! That's when panic would ensue, you did not want your friends to see you in your Power Rangers Pjs and hair uncombed, let me be the first to tell you three girls trying to "rush" and get ready at 7:30 a.m in one bathroom is not a pretty sight. After shuffling us out the door we would find ourselves sitting in the front pew of St. Peters Church
As soon as the priest would say you may go in peace, zoom we were out the door and off to catechism classes adjacent to the church. Our reward for a early morning wake up on a weekend day and 3 hours of holy lecture was a good ole' American breakfast!
And maybe a little conversation in between bites. I really cherish these breakfasts, my mom being a single parent and business owner rarely had the time to sit down with each of her kids one on one and have those special bonding moments, between preparing meals for three kids, carting each of us around to our respective activities (basketball, dance class, karate, etc.) and feeding the bellies as well as the minds of her dear customers you can bet she was exhausted. These breakfasts always included lots of laughs, smiles, and dreams divulged and is the only time none of us fought or brought up delicate issues. It was just about being in that moment and enjoying it.Now that I am grown with my own child I realize how very special those moments were for building the foundation of who I am today. After spending 2 hours this morning with my Will at the Waypoint laughing, smiling and listening to the dreams of a 4 year old without a care in the world I realized that part of what made those moments so special wasn't the food, or how nice the restaurant looks inside its the location and the people that surround you that make it that way. And I can't imagine a better place to sit and let your troubles wash a way than one of these little places in the heart of Douglas. So thank you Kalico Kitchen and Waypoint for providing such warm and loving environment to foster these moments between an mother and her child/children.
Happy Sunday Everyone
